Viterbo
Medieval "City of Popes" with thermal springs
Viterbo, known as the "City of Popes," is one of central Italy's best-preserved medieval cities. Surrounded by imposing walls with towers and gates, its historic center features picturesque cobblestone streets, ancient fountains, and magnificent palaces that transport visitors back to the Middle Ages.
The city rose to prominence in the 13th century when, due to unrest in Rome, the papal court moved to Viterbo. Between 1257 and 1281, five popes were elected here, and the impressive Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace) stands as a testament to this important period. The palace features a beautiful Gothic loggia and the Conclave Hall, where the first papal conclave was held in 1268-1271, lasting nearly three years.
The San Pellegrino quarter is considered one of Italy's most beautiful medieval neighborhoods, with its narrow streets, profferli (external staircases), arches, and towers creating a magical atmosphere. The Piazza San Lorenzo, dominated by the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral and the Papal Palace, forms the religious and political heart of the city.
Viterbo is also famous for its thermal springs, known and used since Etruscan and Roman times. The Terme dei Papi (Popes' Thermal Baths) continue to attract visitors seeking the therapeutic properties of these sulfurous waters.
The city celebrates its medieval heritage with the famous "Macchina di Santa Rosa" festival, held every September 3rd. During this UNESCO-recognized event, a 30-meter illuminated tower is carried through the streets by 100 porters (facchini) in a spectacular nocturnal procession.
With its rich history, well-preserved architecture, thermal baths, and vibrant cultural traditions, Viterbo offers visitors an authentic experience of central Italian heritage away from the crowds of more famous destinations.
