Lago di Vico

Picturesque volcanic lake surrounded by a nature reserve

Lago di Vico (Lake Vico) is a stunning volcanic crater lake nestled in the Cimini Mountains. Formed approximately 400,000 years ago when the volcanic cone collapsed and filled with water, it is one of the highest major lakes in Italy at an elevation of 507 meters above sea level.

The lake is surrounded by the Riserva Naturale del Lago di Vico (Lake Vico Nature Reserve), established in 1982 to protect the unique ecosystem. This protected area encompasses dense forests of beech, oak, and chestnut trees that extend down to the shoreline, creating a picturesque setting. The reserve is home to diverse wildlife, including wild boar, foxes, badgers, and numerous bird species such as herons, kingfishers, and the rare osprey.

According to local legend, the lake was created by Hercules, who stuck his club into the ground and challenged the locals to remove it. When they couldn't, Hercules pulled it out himself, creating a hole from which water emerged to form the lake.

The lake's clean waters make it ideal for swimming, fishing, and water sports. A beach area on the eastern shore provides facilities for visitors, while hiking and biking trails circle the lake and extend into the surrounding forests. Monte Venere, a hill on the eastern side, offers panoramic views of the entire lake and the surrounding landscape.

The nearby town of Ronciglione serves as a gateway to the lake, with its medieval center and Renaissance architecture. Despite its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, Lago di Vico remains relatively uncrowded compared to other Italian lakes, offering visitors a peaceful retreat in a pristine natural setting.
